Art Studio Views 2010
NORTHERN DUTCHESS ARTISTS TO HOST ANNUAL OPEN STUDIO TOUR 21 Artists open their studios for the third year in a row over Labor Day Weekend Rhinebeck, NY, July 1, 2010 – The public is invited to savor two inspiring end-of-summer days in the historic Rhinebeck area visiting professional artists in their studios. The free, Art Studio Views 2010 Tour will be held Saturday, September 4 and Sunday, September 5 from 11 am to 5 pm. On these intimate artful days, the artists are welcoming visitors to observe, first hand, where they work, see art projects in development and learn what inspires them. This year’s participating artists work in a variety of mediums including photography, oils, acrylic, water color, mixed media, ceramics, stained glass and print making. With 21 studios to explore, visitors can plan their own self-guided personal interest tour or visit all 21 artists over the two day event by going to the event website - www.artsnortherndutchess.org/asv to download the tour brochure and map. Links to Dutchess County tourism sites will also provide visitors with locations where they can pick-up the tour brochure. Gazen Gallery, located at 6423 Montgomery Street in Rhinebeck, is the Art Studio Views Headquarters in town. Locally, visitors can stop in, get a map with artist information, speak with Joel Weisbrod, Owner and participating artist on the tour, and then embark on a wonderful art adventure. “The Art Studio Views Tour is a rare opportunity for the public to visit an artists’ private studio, discuss materials and the creative process, and to experience art through the eyes of the artist. If you enjoy their artwork, you might just purchase something wonderful directly from them” says Weisbrod. Many of the studios are clustered together and all are within a few short miles of each other. The areas include Red Hook, Rhinecliff, Staatsburg, Hyde Park and Tivoli, with Rhinebeck central to all. Artists participating in the event are Richard Chianella, Doris Cultraro, Kari Feuer, Rosemary Fox, Dan Goldman, Maureen Gates, Bernard Greenwald, Diana Huff, Betsy Jacaruso, Roxie Johnson, Vera Lambert Kaplan, John Lavin, Joan Blazis Levitt, Christine Livesey, Bruce Murphy, Kevin and Linda Wainwright Palfreyman, Lisa Pinto, Anne-Marie Uebbing, Dean Vallas and Joel Weisbrod. “Many new artists have joined the tour this year, adding to the excellence of the art opportunities visitors will enjoy,” says Kari Feuer, participating artist and one of the organizers of this year’s event.

Gary Stephan, Artist Talk and Discussion
Gary Stephan ‘Painting And’ Exhibition Dates: August 7 thru September 12, 2010 Location: Kleinert/James Arts Center, 34 Tinker Street, Woodstock, NY Artist Talk and Discussion: Sunday, September 5 at 4:00 pm Gallery Hours: Friday - Sunday, 12:00 - 6:00 pm, or by appointment Gary Stephan’s paintings insist on abstraction while feeling like pictures of real places. Peter Schjeldahl wrote in an essay for Cultureport.com, “Stephan deploys catchy, evocative shapes in illusionistic space, where they often behave to the eye as if possessed of natural gravity or buoyancy. He sets perception and metaphor in quivering tension, subtly and delightfully. We savor their interactions as if they were characters in a play or film.” In 2005 Stephan made his first video, “35 Second Elevator”. He now carries a pocket-size point and shoot camera recording “what reasonable people have the good sense to ignore.” With a career beginning in the mid-sixties, Stephan has been the focus of countless solo exhibitions in Europe and here in the U.S., notably at Mary Boone Gallery, Hirschl and Adler Modern, Margo Leavin, and Daniel Weinberg Gallery. His numerous group exhibitions include shows at The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and The New Museum. Gary Stephan’s work is included in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and The Museum of Modern Art among others. He has been selected for awards and honors from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, The National Endowment of the Arts, The New York Foundation for the Arts, and has also received a Guggenheim Fellowship. He is a long time resident of Stone Ridge, NY and Manhattan

Caravel Quartet
Caravel Quartet Date Sunday, September 12, 2010 Location: Kleinert/James Arts Center, 34 Tinker Street, Woodstock, NY Time: 2:00 pm Cost: $10 for members, $15 for non–members The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild is pleased to present the Caravel Quartet, in a performance featuring the repertoire of Ukrainian composers, at the Kleinert/James Arts Center, 34 Tinker Street, Woodstock, NY on Sunday, September 12 at 2 pm. Tickets are $15/$10 WBG members. For more information or to order tickets contact the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, 845.679.2079 or go to www.woodstockguild.org. The Caravel Quartet, comprised of violinists Amie Weiss and Kristi Helberg, violist Miranda Sielaff and cellist Jane Cords O’Hara, officially formed in 2008. Having played together for years in various combinations, all four are members of the dynamic New York City–based orchestra The Knights, a group whose recent engagements have included two recordings for the Sony Classical label and performances at the Dresden Musikfestspiele. A love for performing and working together that sprang from the camaraderie of The Knights soon inspired these players to come together as a string quartet. The four musicians respectively have diverse experience in non–western and folk music styles – North Indian classical music studies, performances with Yo–Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, American folk and old–time music, experimental and multi-genre collaborations – all of which add to the breadth of the Caravel's repertoire and curiosity. The Caravel Quartet has performed at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Ranch in upstate NY, the Cornelia St. Café’s Serial Underground, the Winterfest Concert Series in State College, PA, and Manhattan's Museum of Biblical Art (Mobia) as part of a continuing residency in its Hearing the Sacred series. The group also recorded an album titled Night Has Descended, the musicians' own arrangements of children’s songs and lullabies from around the world. During 2010–11 the Caravel Quartet will feature repertoire of Ukrainian composers, which they will perform at Mobia in conjunction with the exhibit “The Glory of Ukraine” and at the Ukrainian Institute. Other projects include the premiere of a work by composer Dorothy Hindman entitled “Road to Damascus,” which was commissioned by the quartet. This concert is sponsored in part with a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State agency.

Sporting Clays for Scouting
The Rip Van Winkle Council of Boy Scouts has announced its second annual Sporting Clays for Scouting tournament will be held Friday, September 24th at the prestigious Orvis Sandanona Shooting Grounds in Millbrook, NY. This action-packed fundraising event coincides with the 100th Anniversary of Scouting in America and is being underwritten by the new Catskill Hudson Bank branch on Stockade Drive in Kingston. The tournament will serve to support more than 2,000 area youth active in the council’s Scouting programs. Sporting clays has been described as “golf with a shotgun,” where clay targets are thrown in a variety of trajectories, speeds and elevations. “But you do not have to be an experienced shooter or even own a shotgun to participate in this event- it is for shooters and non-shooters alike,” said Scout Executive, Ray Braun. “Orvis instructors will be available at the shooting stations to assist novices and shotguns can be shared by teams, or rented at Orvis Sandanona,” noted Braun. The Orvis Sandanona course is the oldest permitted shooting club in the country and was listed in Esquire magazine as one of the top ten courses in the United States. The cost of the tournament is $250 and participants will be served breakfast and lunch, and receive shells for the course. Scoring will be conducted using the Modified Lewis Class System, with prizes awarded for different skill levels. There will also be a raffle drawing for a 20-Gauge Elite Gold™ Collector’s Series Shotgun, donated by Smith & Wesson, as well as numerous other prizes. All proceeds from the tournament will be used to directly support youth and Scouting programs in the Hudson Valley. The Rip Van Winkle Council provides leadership development programs for more than 2,000 area boys and girls through its Scouting and Explorer programs in Ulster and Greene counties. The council also provides year-round camping opportunities for Scouts and other community groups at Camp Tri-Mount, its 480-acre camping facility in East Jewett, NY. For further information or to reserve a place in the tournament, contact the Council Scout office by phone at (845) 339-0846; by email at rabraun@bsa.org; or visit the council’s website at: www.rvwbsa.org.
